We were born into a culture of injustice...and here's how we change it.
You and I.
We were born into a culture of oppression we did not consent to.
My youngest son...
A brown boy born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia...
He didn't consent to be adopted by parents raced as white with white siblings who have no embodied experience around surviving in a world that's anti-blackness.
You and I.
We did not create these systems of oppression.
And yet we are responsible for unlearning and dismantling them.
We are responsible for liberating ourselves from white supremacy, patriarchy, heteronormativity, ableism, fat phobia, purity culture, and other forms of oppression.
BECAUSE EVERYONE IS WORTHY AND DESERVING OF LOVE, SAFETY, AND BELONGING.
We are responsible for co-creating a world of justice and safety for all bodies and all beings.
These systems of oppression have been created to divide and conquer us, to hold power over our bodies and Earth's resources, to create distraction and disconnection from ourselves and one another.
To decolonize our bodies and mind...
To educate ourselves...
To dismantle what harms each of us...
is to be part of the rebellion and part of the revolution for a more just and equitable system.
Here are four steps you can take as an anti-racist:
STEP ONE: Un/Learn
You can read.
You can watch.
You can write.
You can engage.
STEP TWO: Feel
You can breathe and release.
You can grieve and rage.
STEP THREE: Give and Buy
You can give for the accumulated, ancestral wealth that's been lost.
You can give for the disproportionate number of Black bodies being arrested and held on bail.
You can buy from Black restaurant owners (this is a searchable list in the Bay Area).
You can buy from Black-owned Etsy shops.
STEP FOUR: Act
You can contact or research around your local police department to find out about body cams, de-escalation trainings, use of force, and police officer accountability.
You can join a white caucus space.
You can fill your social media feeds with Black educators, activists, movements, and voices.
YOU CAN TAKE ACTION.
Then I invite you to watch yourself.
Witness if you have the privilege to turn away from emails and lists like this one.
Notice if you have the safety and spaciousness in moments of overwhelm and helplessness to set it all down.
And then turn back.
In love and justice,
Daniela
